1. Start your pc in safe mode.
2. copy Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830) – Setup Self-Extracting Cabinet from a flash drive onto your pc. or download off of Microsofts website if it isn’t blocked by the virus.
3. If your pc is in safe mode the exe should run.
4. do a quick scan. If antispyware soft is the only virus on your pc 1 threat should be detected and removed automatically. Then the removal tool alerts you that the virus is only partially removed and you need a official anti virus to remove the rest. Ignore that as the 1 file removed seems to disable antispyware softs functionallity.
5. Use the manual removal steps above to hunt down and remove the remaining files such as the exe. and registry keys.

Now if this works as good for you as it did for me your pc should run exes and all of the other blocked files. The only problem I noticed is that internet explorer no longer works as antispyware soft changed the proxy or something.

“We are not aware of significant impact on consumers and believe we have effectively limited such occurrence,” McAfee said in a statement.

Though bloggers have written that thousands of computers running Windows XP with SP3 were affected.

According to reporting by AP, Intel Corp also appeared to be one of the victims, said posts on Twitter.

All appears to be fine with the service now, but if you are running McAfee and are having problems, please seek teh latest update (which should remove this incorrect file reporting).

Google has warned consumers against installing fake antivirus software on their machines. According to the Google “The Fake AV threat is rising in prevalence, both absolutely and relative to other forms of Web-based malware,” they said that Fake Antivirus programs account for about 15 percent of all malware on the net.

So what is a fake antivirus software?

There are a variety of ways that malicious software can be installed on your computer. According to Panda Security, criminals created 25 million pieces of malware, which includes viruses, bots, keystroke loggers and other forms of malicious code in 2009. This is more than the combined total of all pieces of malware created since the start of the internet and personal computing.

Online criminals have followed the trends in respectable software and online companies and have moved to automation and systemisation of virus production. This is the equivilant of Henry Ford’s Model T production line, only with viruses.

This automation and new professional approach allows online criminals to create thousands of variants of the same malware file, according to Paul Correll of Panda Labs. Paul said “cybercriminals have figured out that they can saturate anti-virus labs by creating millions of samples,” , he also said that “by doing that they can slow down the response times and their infection ratio would be more successful.”

Panda Labs has identified a massive 40 million pieces of malware and are adding 55,000 new samples to this database on average, every day. Trojans are still the most common form of malware, making up two thirds of all identified pieces of malware in 2009.

Of particular concern are social networking sites. Sites like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace are increasingly being used to transmit viruses and trojans between users. Just because a link has been sent by a trusted friend, does not mean that it is any less likely to contain a potentially dangerous piece of malware, or malicious code.

This is a freeware copy of McAfee 2008. The program tries to be user friendly but the program is not. Some of the advanced features are hidden deep inside the menu options and the dialog boxes are confusing and not clearly laid out.

Attempting to detail every security function, Free McAfee handles viruses, plus includes a firewall, hard drive cleaner, disk defrag & security manager. By including all of this additional software, sometime the software can be slow and use more memory than a leaner program. This is a freeware version that works, but the cons of loss of speed and processing power must be weighed up against the cost savings.

Overall, I give this two stars.

On Tuesday 29 September, Microsoft Corporation released a new free antivirus download. The free Microsoft antivirus software will protect computers against viruses, spyware, malware and other forms of malicious computer code.

The new antvirus product, called Microsoft Security Essentials, is available for download online. It has been built using similar technology to that used by the global software giant in the  computer security programs it designs for corporations.

“With Microsoft Security Essentials, consumers can get high-quality protection that is easy to get and easy to use, and it won’t get in their way,” according to Amy Barzdukas, general manager for consumer security at Microsoft.

“Consumers have told us that they want the protection of real-time security software but we know that too many are either unwilling or unable to pay for it, and so end up unprotected.”
Microsoft has hopes that the antivirus download will be widely adopted and will help to protect Microsoft Windows environments in general. Windows is operating system of choice for 90% of the world’s personal computers.

Security Essentials has been designed in a similar manner to many of the top antivirus programs on the market. It is designed to run behind the scenes, providing protection to machines against viruses, Trojans and other forms of malicious computer code.
Microsoft Security Essentials is a real time program that automatically updates against teh latest viruses and computer threats.

According to comments from large industry player Symantec “From a security perspective, this Microsoft tool offers reduced defenses at a critical point in the battle against cyber crime,”

How to Remove McAfee Antivirus 

A common question we receive is to how remove McAfee Antivirus. McAfee can come pre-packaged on a new computer or you may have trialled a version with a limited day trial. Whatever the reasons, if you are looking to start using a new antivirus system and want to remove McAfee antivirus here is what you need to do.

 Using the traditional remove programs/hardware function in Windows will not remove all traces of McAfee Antivirus. Antivirus programs are notoriously difficult to remove, if they were easy, then spyware could also easily remove them and then wreak havoc on your system.

Step 1 to Remove McAfee Antivirus

Uninstall McAfee by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in the Control Panel

Steps for Windows XP users

1. Go to Start, Settings and then Control Panel.
2. Click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
3. Select the McAfee Security Centre item from the list.
4. Click Remove and then follow the steps on the screen.

If you are using Windows Vista

1. Go to Start, Search, then type Programs and Features, and click Go icon.

4. Click Uninstall and follow the steps on the screen.

Step 2 to Remove McAfee Antivirus

Download and run the file MCPR.exe

1. Download the removal tool from the McAfee website at the following location http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe 
2. Save this file onto the desktop of your computer.
3. Open the file above.
4. Close all McAfee windows and any other unnecessary programs.
5. Click on the file MCPR.exe and run the removal tool if you are using Windows XP. If you are using Windows Vista, you must right click MCPR.exe and select Run as Administrator. 
6. After you receive the message ‘Clean Up Successful’, you can restart your computer
7. When you restart McAfee antivirus will be removed from your computer

Your system should now be ready to install another type of antivirus software.
